Set Free Indeed: Why Christians Still Face Satan’s Attacks and How to Stand Victorious in Christ

One of the most encouraging promises spoken by the Lord Jesus Christ is found in John 8:36:

"If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." (John 8:36, KJV)

This verse has comforted believers for centuries. It proclaims the glorious truth that Jesus Christ has the power to deliver sinners from the bondage of sin and bring them into true liberty. Yet many Christians ask an important question: If Jesus has set me free, why do I still experience sickness, trials, temptations, oppression, and attacks from the devil? 

Some believers become confused when they encounter suffering. They assume that if Christ has truly set them free, they should never struggle with illness, hardship, persecution, or spiritual attacks. When such difficulties arise, they begin questioning their faith or even their salvation.

The Bible provides clear answers to these concerns. It teaches that believers are genuinely free in Christ, yet they continue to live in a fallen world where spiritual warfare remains a reality. Understanding this truth helps Christians maintain confidence in Christ while standing firm against the attacks of the enemy.

What Does It Mean to Be Set Free by Jesus?

Before discussing spiritual attacks, we must first understand what Jesus meant when He said believers are "free indeed."

The freedom Christ gives is primarily spiritual freedom. Before salvation, every person is a slave to sin.

"Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin." (John 8:34, KJV)

Sin is not merely something people do; it is a master that controls the human heart. Men and women may believe they are free, but apart from Christ they remain under the power of sin, death, and Satan.

When a person trusts in Christ, several remarkable things happen:

• His sins are forgiven.
• He is reconciled to God.
• He receives eternal life.
• He becomes a child of God.
• He is delivered from the condemnation of sin.
• He is transferred from the kingdom of darkness into God's kingdom.

This is the freedom Jesus promised.

The believer is no longer under the curse of sin and no longer faces eternal judgment.

"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus." (Romans 8:1, KJV)

This freedom is real, powerful, and everlasting.

If Jesus Has Set You Free, Are You Free Forever?

The simple biblical answer is yes.

The salvation provided by Christ is not temporary. Eternal life is not life that lasts only until the next failure or temptation. Eternal life is everlasting life.

"And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand." (John 10:28, KJV)

Notice the certainty of Christ's words. He did not say believers might never perish. He said they shall never perish.

Furthermore, salvation depends on Christ's power rather than man's ability.

"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." (Philippians 1:6, KJV)

God finishes what He starts. The believer's security rests not in his own strength but in the faithfulness of God.

This does not mean Christians become perfect overnight. They still struggle with weaknesses and temptations. However, their position before God has changed forever because they belong to Christ.

Why Do Christians Still Suffer in a Fallen World?

Although believers are spiritually free, they still live in mortal bodies within a world corrupted by sin.

When Adam sinned, the entire creation suffered the consequences.

"For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now." (Romans 8:22, KJV)

Disease, death, natural disasters, suffering, and sorrow all exist because of the fall of mankind.

Salvation does not immediately remove Christians from this fallen environment. Instead, believers continue living here as witnesses for Christ until He calls them home or returns.

This explains why Christians still experience sickness and physical weakness.

Can the Devil Attack Christians?

Yes, the Bible clearly teaches that Satan can attack believers.

However, his power is limited by God.

The devil is not equal to God. He is a created being who can only operate within the boundaries God allows.

The story of Job provides one of the clearest examples.

"So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown." (Job 2:7, KJV)

Job was a righteous man. Yet God permitted Satan to afflict him physically.

Notice that Satan could not touch Job without divine permission.

This truth should comfort believers. The devil may attack, but he remains under God's sovereign authority.

Why Does God Allow Satan to Attack Christians?

This question has challenged believers throughout history.

While we may not always understand God's purposes, Scripture reveals several reasons why God sometimes permits trials.

1. To Strengthen Faith

Faith grows through testing.

"That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth..." (1 Peter 1:7, KJV)

Just as gold is refined by fire, faith is strengthened through difficulties.

2. To Develop Spiritual Maturity

Trials teach patience, endurance, humility, and dependence upon God.

"Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience." (James 1:3, KJV)

3. To Display God's Glory

Sometimes God allows suffering so His power may be demonstrated through His people.

Many believers have become powerful testimonies because of how they endured hardships through God's grace.

4. To Keep Believers Dependent on Christ

The Apostle Paul spoke of a "thorn in the flesh."

"There was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me..." (2 Corinthians 12:7, KJV)

God used this affliction to keep Paul humble and dependent upon divine grace.

Can Satan Cause Diseases?

The Bible contains examples where Satan was involved in physical afflictions.

Job's suffering is one example.

Another example is found in Luke 13.

"And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years..." (Luke 13:16, KJV)

This passage indicates that Satan can be involved in certain physical afflictions.

Though we do not know, it would be sensible  to conclude that sicknesses are caused by the devil.

The Bible teaches that disease exists in a fallen world. Though, some illnesses arise naturally because human bodies are subject to weakness, aging, and death.

Sicknesses are the results of sin and Satan in a fallen world.

What Satan Cannot Do to a Christian

While Satan can attack believers, there are many things he cannot do.

• He cannot steal eternal life.
• He cannot remove a believer from Christ's hand.
• He cannot separate Christians from God's love.
• He cannot override God's authority.
• He cannot destroy the soul of a child of God.

"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers... shall be able to separate us from the love of God." (Romans 8:38-39, KJV)

This truth should fill believers with confidence.

How Can Christians Protect Themselves from Satan's Attacks?

The Bible does not teach fear. It teaches preparation.

God has provided spiritual weapons for His people.

1. Put on the Whole Armor of God

"Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." (Ephesians 6:11, KJV)

The armor of God includes:

• The belt of truth
• The breastplate of righteousness
• The shoes of the gospel of peace
• The shield of faith
• The helmet of salvation
• The sword of the Spirit

Every Christian should daily put on this spiritual armor through faith and obedience.

2. Remain Faithful in Prayer

Prayer is one of the believer's strongest defenses.

Jesus frequently emphasized the necessity of prayer.

"Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation." (Matthew 26:41, KJV)

Prayer brings believers into close fellowship with God and strengthens them against spiritual attacks. Fasting can also help.

3. Fill Your Mind with Scripture

Jesus defeated Satan's temptations by quoting Scripture.

Each time the devil attacked, Jesus responded:

"It is written..."

The Word of God exposes Satan's lies and strengthens believers against deception.

"Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." (Psalm 119:11, KJV)

4. Walk in Obedience to God

Disobedience gives opportunities for spiritual defeat.

While believers cannot lose salvation through sin, unconfessed sin can weaken their fellowship with God and make them vulnerable to spiritual struggles.

A life of obedience promotes spiritual strength.

5. Resist the Devil

"Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." (James 4:7, KJV)

Christians are not instructed to negotiate with Satan. They are instructed to resist him through faith, truth, and submission to God.

6. Stay Connected to a Faithful Church

God never intended believers to fight spiritual battles alone.

A sound local church provides encouragement, accountability, teaching, and fellowship.

Many Christians become vulnerable when they isolate themselves from other believers.

The Ultimate Victory of the Christian

The Christian life is not a promise of a trouble-free existence.

Rather, it is the promise of victory through Christ despite life's difficulties.

Believers may face sickness.

They may face persecution.

They may face temptation.

They may endure spiritual attacks.

But none of these things can defeat God's eternal purpose.

"Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us." (Romans 8:37, KJV)

The day is coming when Christ will return and complete the believer's redemption.

At that moment every disease, every pain, every sorrow, and every attack from Satan will end forever.

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain." (Revelation 21:4, KJV)

Ye are Free Indeed!

If Jesus has truly set you free, you are free indeed and free forever. The freedom Christ gives is not temporary. It is grounded in His finished work on the cross and secured by His power.

However, until the Lord returns, Christians continue living in a fallen world where Satan remains active. The devil may attack through temptation, discouragement, opposition, and even physical affliction when God permits it. Yet these attacks do not mean Christ has abandoned His people.

The believer's security rests in Christ, not in circumstances. Sickness does not cancel salvation. Trials do not nullify God's promises. Spiritual warfare does not diminish Christ's victory.

Therefore, Christians must stand firm in faith, clothe themselves with the armor of God, remain steadfast in prayer, fill their hearts with Scripture, and resist the devil through submission to God.

The child of God can face every trial with confidence, knowing that Christ has already won the victory. The attacks of Satan are temporary, but the freedom given by Jesus Christ is eternal.
